Dude, it happened to me. And not just once. For years, I focused on the bodywork, the engine, and leaving the exterior aesthetics impeccable.
But every time I sat behind the wheel, I felt like my cockpit had no soul. It wasn't mine. It didn't tell my story.
That's when I discovered the wonderful (and addictive) world of interior customization for classic cars.

Today I'm going to tell you about that process. What I learned, the mistakes I made, and, most importantly, how you can transform your car's interior into a true work of art that screams who you are, without having to say a single word.
Why customize the interior of your classic car?
I'll tell you straight: a car can look perfect on the outside... but if you open the door and find a worn, faded, or just plain generic interior, all the charm falls away.
A customized cockpit isn't just about aesthetics. It's about comfort, it's about identity, it's about turning every trip into an experience that goes beyond just driving.

When I started with the idea of renovating the interior of my car, the first thing I understood was this: materials are everything.
There's no point in skimping here. Cheap is expensive, and there's nothing worse than investing time and passion only to end up with an interior that looks fake or wears out quickly.
The materials that raise the bar the most:
- Natural leather: Soft, with an unmistakable aroma, it ages elegantly.
- Alcántara: A type of luxury microfiber used by brands like Ferrari and Lamborghini.
- Hardwood: Walnut, cherry, or oak. Perfect for retro paneling and details.

- Polished metal or brushed aluminum: It gives that industrial and robust touch.
Trust me… touching a genuine leather-wrapped steering wheel, or resting your arm on a handcrafted wood panel, completely changes your relationship with the car.
How I Customized the Benches: Comfort + Style
The seats were my first big challenge. The originals were fine… but they were flat, hard, and visually boring.
What did I do?
- I opted for perforated natural leather to allow him to breathe better on hot days.
- I asked the upholsterer to add diamond-shaped seams, which in addition to being elegant, offer better grip.
- We added reinforcement on the sides for more support when cornering.
- I chose a color that contrasted with the exterior of the car, but without losing the classic essence: camel with black stitching.
The result was amazing. Not only does it look incredible, but every time I sit in it, I feel like the car is hugging me.
Custom Flyers: Where the Connection Begins
If I'm honest... I never understood people who leave the generic flyer.
The steering wheel is what you touch the most, what you look at all the time, your point of connection with the machine.
My choice:
- Walnut wood base, hand-varnished.
- Polished aluminum rings.
- Personalized centerpiece with the classic car logo and my last name engraved (yes, a whim… but what a beautiful whim).
- Slightly smaller diameter to improve handling feel, but without losing the retro aesthetic.
Every time I grab that steering wheel, it reminds me why I love this world so much.
Panels that tell stories
This is where the magic is complete.
I didn't want to just stick with a refurbished dashboard. I wanted every detail to speak volumes.
What did I include?
- Wooden front panel, with natural veins, worked by a local artisan.
- I replaced the plastic buttons with metal, airplane-style switches.
- I upholstered the doors in the same leather as the seats, with Alcantara details.
- I added a metal plaque with the restoration date and my name. A personal touch that makes me smile every time I see it.
Combining colors and textures: the art is in the details
This was one of the biggest challenges.
Keys I learned:
- Never combine more than three materials main ones.
- If the bodywork is very striking, look for a more sober and elegant interior.
- Contrasts work: light leather with dark stitching, or warm wood with cool metals.
- Textures matter as much as colors. Matte Alcantara paired with glossy leather creates a delightful visual balance.
Artisanal techniques: where the difference is born
One thing I can assure you is that nothing beats handmade work.
I worked with a specialized upholsterer who has been doing this for over 30 years. Watching him cut the leather, draw the seams, and patiently fit each piece together was quite an experience.
You can't achieve that level of detail with industrial work or generic kits.
How much does it cost to customize an interior (and why it's worth every penny)

It depends on many factors:
- Materials of your choice.
- Level of detail.
- Labor (if it's artisanal, it goes up... but believe me, it's worth it).
