Restoration of classic electric cars

Know the trend of restoration of classic electric cars: Benefits, challenges, and the future for collectors in Mexico and around the world.

Just a couple of years ago, if someone had suggested converting my old 1967 Chevrolet Impala In an electric car, I probably would have laughed.

For many, the roar of a V8 engine is part of a car's soul. But things have changed. The world is changing.

And, to be honest, my view on restoration changed too.

Today I want to tell you how I faced the most controversial (and revolutionary) decision I have made as a collector: transform a classic combustion engine into an electric car.

Yes, it sounds crazy. But sometimes, you have to look beyond the escape route.

A betrayal of the classics… or a necessary evolution?

When I first heard about restoring classic electric cars, I thought it was a passing fad.

But after seeing what some shops were doing with Mustangs, VW Combis, and even vintage Porsches, I couldn't help but get interested.

I asked myself: What if you could maintain the aesthetic essence of the car, but make it more efficient, quieter, and more environmentally friendly?

It wasn't an easy decision. In fact, I consulted several collector friends.

Some told me I was ruining a gem. Others congratulated me for daring to innovate.

In the end, I decided to give it a try.

What does it mean to convert a classic car to electric?

First of all, it's not just about taking out the old engine and putting in batteries like crazy.

There's a very delicate technical process involved, and it's vital to do it with professionals who understand both electric and vintage cars.

Here I summarize the key steps of the process:

  1. Removal of the original engine and all internal combustion components.
  2. Chassis adaptation to house the electric motor and battery pack.
  3. Reconfiguration of the electrical system and replacement of the instrument panel.
  4. Installation of charging system, power controller and cooling.
  5. Security tests before rolling again.

It sounds technical (and it is), but seeing your classic move for the first time in electric mode… it's a feeling that's hard to describe.

Absolute silence, smooth acceleration and clean driving.

Advantages of restoring a classic car to electric

I'll be honest: it's not all roses. But there are many advantages worth considering, especially if you plan to use your classic more regularly.

Efficiency and zero emissions

With the electric motor, you not only save on gasoline, but you completely eliminate polluting emissions.

Perfect if you live in a city with environmental restrictions.

Less maintenance

Goodbye to oil changes, spark plugs, radiator, or carburetor problems.

Electric motors have fewer moving parts and are easier to maintain.

Instant acceleration

Can you imagine your classic car responding instantly when you step on the accelerator?

With the instant torque of the electric motor, that's a reality.

Access to restricted areas

In some cities in Mexico and around the world, electric cars are allowed to circulate freely in areas where combustion-powered vehicles are restricted.

The challenges of this transformation

Of course, it's not all rosy. Converting a classic to electric also has its challenges, and I want to share the most important ones with you:

High cost

Depending on the model, type of batteries and quality of work, a conversion can cost between $300,000 and $800,000 Mexican pesos, or more.

Extra weight

Batteries are heavy, and this can affect suspension, steering, and braking if not properly adapted.

Loss of the “sound soul”

Yes, I admit it. The roar of the engine is part of the magic. When you convert to electric, that sound disappears. Some miss it, others appreciate it.

Legal regulations

In Mexico, there is still a lack of clear regulations regarding this type of conversion. In some states, the verification process can be complicated.

Impact on the value of the car for collectors

This is one of the most controversial topics: Does a classic car lose value if you convert it to electric?

The answer depends on the approach:

  • If you see it as original collector's item, yes, it loses authenticity.
  • If you see it as usable, modern and personalized vehicle, gains in functionality.

Some buyers are beginning to value a restored classic car with clean, efficient technology more than a completely original one that's unusable for everyday use.

In addition, certain brands such as Jaguar, Volkswagen, and Porsche are already launching their own lines of electric classics.

The future seems clear: Electrification will come to the classical world, whether we like it or not..

Where are these conversions made in Mexico?

More and more specialized workshops are emerging across the country. Some of the most recognized include:

  • Vonnen Mexico – Specialists in hybrids and electrification.
  • EV Classic Garage (CDMX) – Famous for their work with Beetles and Mustangs.
  • ElectroAutos Mexico – Workshop focusing on safe and approved adaptations.

My advice: Do your research, visit the workshop, ask about previous cases and demand a guarantee.

Is it worth taking the step?

It depends on your profile as a collector.

If you're a purist, this trend probably isn't for you.

But if, like me, you want to give your classic car a new lease on life, making it more functional, quieter, and more sustainable… then yes, it's totally worth it.

My electric Mustang doesn't have the roar it used to, but it's given me something more valuable: tranquility, practicality and many, many admiring glances.

The future classic is here

The restoration of classic electric cars It's more than a fad.

It's an evolution that's gaining traction among modern collectors, car lovers, and technology enthusiasts.

Not everyone will understand. Some will say we're desecrating the car's soul.

But I see it as a way to preserve it and adapt it to the new times.

Because, in the end, what matters is not just the engine, but the story we continue to write with every kilometer.

And you, would you dare to electrify your classic car?
